For many people, candles are an essential part of a cozy home: they create atmosphere, fragrance, and warmth. But not all waxes are created equal. Especially with scented candles, it's worth taking a closer look at the base: Which wax burns cleaner? Which is more sustainable? And which smells better?
In this article, we compare vegetable waxes such as soy and rapeseed wax with paraffin, one of the most widely used waxes in the candle industry.
What is paraffin?
Paraffin is a byproduct of petroleum refining and has been used in candle production for decades. It is inexpensive, readily available, and easy to process – which is why paraffin is often found in mass-produced products.
Advantages of paraffin:
- very cost-effective
- easy to dye and process
- widespread
Disadvantages of paraffin:
- based on fossil raw materials
- It can produce more soot during combustion.
- less sustainable overall balance
- often shorter burning time
Nevertheless, paraffin is not "bad", it is simply a traditional standard material – but with limitations if one values sustainability and air quality.
What is soy wax?
Soy wax is extracted from soybean oil. It is a plant-based, renewable, and biodegradable wax – and has become particularly popular in recent years, especially in the field of high-quality scented candles.
Advantages of soy wax:
- plant-based & biodegradable
- longer burning time
- very good fragrance release ("cold & hot throw")
- less soot-producing combustion
- vegan alternative
Disadvantages of soy wax:
- slightly more expensive
- It may show "frosting" (purely visually) when exposed to strong temperature changes.
What is rapeseed wax?
Rapeseed wax is extracted from European rapeseed and is also plant-based and renewable. The regional aspect is particularly appealing: rapeseed grows locally, thus reducing long transport routes.
Advantages of rapeseed wax:
- regional/European raw material
- very good burning characteristics
- very clean combustion
- sustainable CO₂ balance
- vegan & biodegradable
Disadvantages of rapeseed wax:
- somewhat more sensitive during processing
- less common, therefore more expensive
