Proper candle care: The best tips for scented candles
How do you properly care for candles? Here you'll find simple tips for longer burning time, less soot, and optimal fragrance distribution. Perfect for high-quality scented candles.
1. The first time it's lit – the "memory burn"
The first time you light a candle, it's crucial. Let the candle burn until the entire surface is liquid.
Why this is important: Wax has a "memory". If the candle is extinguished too early, a tunnel forms – and a large part of the wax remains unused later.
Tip: Depending on the size of the candle, this takes approximately 1–3 hours.
2. Trim the wick – for a clean, beautiful burn
A wick that is too long leads to soot buildup, an unsteady flame, and can cause the wax to burn faster. Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each lighting.
Good to know: Wick trimmers are specifically for candles, but a small pair of scissors serves the same purpose.
3. Avoid drafts
Candle flames prefer a calm environment. Drafts cause the flame to flicker – resulting in uneven burning, sooting, or faster wax consumption.
Ideally: Never place candles directly near open windows, fans, or heating outlets.
4. Do not let it burn for too long.
More isn't always better! Don't burn candles for more than about 4 hours at a time. This keeps the temperature stable, the fragrance balanced, and the candle lasts longer.
